La historia principal de Futurama se centra en el personaje de Philip J. Fry , un adolescente crecido típico del siglo XX, quien no sabe hacer muchas cosas bien , ni hacia donde se encamina su vida. Su trabajo de repartidor de pizzas, es el lugar donde todas sus frustraciones encuentran definición.
Un accidente al llevar un pedido en donde funcionaban experimentos "criogénicos", deja congelado a Fry durante mil años, logrando salir de ese estado, en el futuro, en una ciudad con culturas que comienza a desconocer, la tecnología y el mundo ya son demasiado avanzadas para su entendimiento, su historia, familia y conocidos habían quedado atrás para siempre.
Mediante una búsqueda en el directorio da con su tátara tatara sobrino nieto , que se trata de un anciano científico, el Profesor Hubert Farnsworth, quien a su vez posee una empresa de reparto intergaláctico, en la cual Fry comienza a encontrar su nuevo hogar, junto a la gente que trabaja en dicha empresa Planet Express, junto a Leela, una mujer ciclope , de quien Fry se enamora a lo largo de los episodios, y Bender un robot con mala conducta, vicioso y poco confiable.
